We believe that learning a language is personal. It needs to fit with your lifestyle, your job and your interests. There is no one-size-fits-all. My-Wordz is all about individualized learning. We keep developing technology that enables the most individual way to learn a language.
The My-Wordz idea was born during a dinner I had in China. I asked the participants to speak Mandarin so I could improve my language skills. But: I didn’t understand a single word, although I had been studying Mandarin for several years. I became so frustrated after all of the hard work I had put into learning the language. The words those guys were using were unknown to me. Words like sensor or semiconductor were not exactly the standard vocabulary you´d find in any textbook. So I began developing My-Wordz. An app that would listen to me to create flashcards of the words I would need for such a conversation.
We are Jens, Stephen and Zakaria. Jens and Stephen met at Harvard Business School where they discovered their joint passion for language learning.
Jens used to hate language learning This changed after he spent one year in the U.S. during high school. Suddenly, he enjoyed speaking new languages. Fast-forward many years — he works in the tech industry, which not only brought him back to the U.S. very regularly, he also spends quite a bit of time in China. And he knew that it really paid to speak the local language. So he started to learn Mandarin, which is a tough cookie. He also enjoys programming a lot, and once he pinned down the problem, he and Stephen started to develop a software to solve it. The two then convinced Zakaria to join them. So now we’re eager to create the most personalized language experience outside direct immersion!
